I have a lot of thoughts on this. Angry thoughts, to be completely honest. I’ll try to limit my use of capslock, but no promises.

I love the lack of capitalism in the creation of fanworks. It’s extremely important to me. We do it for ourselves, for each other. It is a free exchange of ideas and talents, done out of pure love and desire to create. FUCK YOU for trying to take that away from us.

I get it! Corporations just HATE that this huge, popular thing exists and they can’t figure out how to make money off it. So publishing companies scour archives for the next 50 Shades of Grey, trying to find anything that can have the ‘serial numbers’ filed off enough so that it can be resold as an original work.

They want to take something freely available, deny public access to it, then make people pay for the privilege of reading it. Isn’t capitalism beautiful?

I’m not saying that writers wanting to be paid for their work is inherently bad. Of course not! I have bookshelves full of books I paid money for. But people offering up their talents without requiring an exchange of goods in return is something I find truly beautiful. It goes against the grain of society, which teaches us ‘nothing’s ever free.’

Fandom is a small village, sitting around a campfire telling stories to each other. Anyone can sit and listen, anyone can contribute. You don’t need to pay to sit and listen – what a horrible shame it would be if someone built a fence, controlled the gate, held out their hand and denied you entry to the campfire if you didn’t have the cash in your pocket.

That is not what fanfic is about. It’s beautiful as is. Let’s not ever forget that.

You know how it is, right, ladies? You know a guy for a while. You hang out with him. You do fun things with him—play video games, watch movies, go hiking, go to concerts. You invite him to your parties. You listen to his problems. You do all this because you think he wants to be your friend.

But then, then comes the fateful moment where you find out that all this time, he’s only seen you as a potential girlfriend. And then if you turn him down, he may never speak to you again. This has happened to me time after time: I hit it off with a guy, and, for all that I’ve been burned in the past, I start to think that this one might actually care about me as a person. And then he asks me on a date.

I tell him how much I enjoy his company, how much I value his friendship. I tell him that I really want to be his friend and to continue hanging out with him and talking about our favorite books or exploring new restaurants or making fun of avant-garde theatre productions. But he rejects me. He doesn’t answer my calls or e-mails; if we’d been making plans to do something before this fateful incident, these plans mysteriously fail to materialize. (This is why I never did get around to seeing the Hunger Games movie. Not to name any names, but thanks a lot, Tom.) Later, when I run into him at social events, our conversations are awkward and lukewarm. This is because the moment we met, he put me in the girlfriend-zone, and now he can’t see me as friend material.

I must say that I find this really unfair. I mean, I’m a nice girl. I have a lot to offer as a friend, like not being a douchebag and stuff. But males just don’t want to be friends with nice girls like me. They can’t help it, I guess; it’s just how they’re wired, biologically. Evolution conditioned our male hominid ancestors to seek nice girls as mates and form friendship bonds only with the other dudes that they hunted mammoths with. It’s true—I know this because I studied hominids in my fifth-grade science class.

So what’s the answer? Should I take up mammoth-hunting in an attempt to appeal to the friendship centers of men’s primal lizardbrains? Should I keep making guy “friends” and then prevent them from making a move on me by subtly undermining their self-confidence? Should I just give up on those manipulative, game-playing, two-faced bastards once and for all? I don’t know. I mean, I’d really like to have a true friendship with a guy someday, but it’s so hard to trust and respect them when they never say what they mean—and you never know when you might be relegated to the girlfriend-zone.

This may be the least classy gimmick ever: a nightclub with a one-way mirror in the women’s bathroom.

In a creepy combination of peep show and police interrogation room, customers at Glasgow’s Shimmy Club can hire two private “Smoke & Mirrors” booths that align with the women’s bathroom sinks. On the other side of the glass, girls wash their hands, retouch their makeup, and pose for drunken selfies—unaware that they’re being watched.

Thanks to guys posting their “Smoke & Mirrors” pics on Twitter and Instagram, Scottish newspaper The Express broke the story earlier this week, provoking disgust among, well… anyone who has ever used a bathroom. While the Shimmy Club claims that there are signs posted to alert women of the two-way mirrors, the Express quotes horrified club-goers who were completely unaware of the situation.

So far, the Shimmy Club has done little more than post a non-apology on Facebook. “The Shimmy Club’s two-way mirror is a design feature created as a bit of fun,” the message reads. “The vast majority of people who have visited the club have taken it as such.” Additionally, a representative from G1 Group, the company that owns the Shimmy Club, is quoted in the Express as saying that there are no one-way mirrors at all. An intriguing statement, considering the fact that the club’s original promo video features what seems to be a short clip filmed through the mirrors themselves. Not exactly a PR success story. I’ll repeat what I said on Twitter:

1. Fanfiction has always been about the option to use use all the tools, including sexuality, to tell story. Therefore, Amazon is not groking the marketplace of readers or creators.

2. The contractual terms are shit for writers. Traditional professional writers would be strongly advised against signing a contract of this nature. Is your fannish work worth less? Should it be?

3. To what degree does this suggest that the fanfiction can only be legitimized through the eradication of fan culture’s gift economy?

4. Fanfiction has significantly changed our media culture. This project isn’t just capitalizing on it, but an attempt to shape it. Is this a feedback loop in action or an attempt to stop the catalyst that is our work?

5. I am the first person to say creativity should be compensated and fan work should not be considered some pale imitation of “real” story telling as it’s essentially an ancient tradition. But this plan from Amazon is a hot mess.
